Current mood: thoughtful Category: Religion and Philosophy
Is the world getting worse? Yeah, there has been war in the middle east for thousands of years, but doesn't it seem to be getting more intense. We have always been good at killing others and destruction, but don't we seem to be getting better at it? I'm pretty sure there were no "good old days". Sure, 'Leave it to Beaver' seems like a better time, but I doubt that any but a few white, middle class people lived that way. WWII, the Depression, WWI, the Reconstruction, the Civil War, etc was before that. Follow the train of evil and destruction back through history and it was always there. My question is, is the world truly becoming steadily more evil? Or, is it just because I live here and now and pay attention to the news that I am even asking this question? I know plenty of people who think things are pretty good, but most of them don't pick up a newspaper, don't listen to the news, never watch it on TV, or the internet. They are too busy entertaining themselves while evil continues. As the band played on while the Titanic sank. Maybe the world is getting worse and that is the reason why. No one cares. Those in this world that are most gifted by the cosmic lottery to be born in a place that makes them rich and safe, do nothing but spend their time rushing towards self satisfaction and frenzied mediocrity. Maybe, just maybe we could make things a little better if we just begin to do something about it. Yet, attending a church every week, I see that very few of those who even claim faith in God actually get involved in doing something to make a difference. Listening to a sermon and dropping few dimes in the plate each week constitutes their entire contribution to the world they live in. It would follow, that if the very saints of the church who are called on by God to do good, to love their neighbor, to give sacrificially, do not do this; then the world must truly be getting worse. I want to shout the question out; "What are we going to do about this?!" the only problem is, everyone is listening to the band playing on.
